Adam Ebbin on the Issues

For more than twenty years, Adam Ebbin has fought to advance the values shared by Virginia progressives. Since 2004, he has represented Alexandria, Arlington and Fairfax in the House of Delegates, where he has been a leader on the environment, equal protection for all Virginians, support for our public schools and the need to protect our most vulnerable. He has also been the leading voice against the abuses of Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli.

As the next Senator from the 30th District, Adam Ebbin will put the relationships and knowledge he has gained in the House of Delegates to use improving the lives of Virginians. He will continue to be a tireless advocate on the issues that matter most to our community.

Standing Up for Our Values

Adam Ebbin is the recent recipient of the Chesapeake Climate Action Network's Clean Air Champion Award, the Legislator of the Year Award from the Building Trades Council and the Virginia Education Association's Solid as a Rock for Public Education Award. During his time in the House of Delegates, Adam has earned a 100% voting record rating from the AFL-CIO and NARAL Pro-Choice Virginia. He has been recognized as an Outstanding Virginian by Equality Virginia.

Opposing the Abuses of Ken Cuccinelli. Adam Ebbin has been the leading voice in the House of Delegates against the radical agenda of Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli. When Cuccinelli refused to allow our universities to include protections for LGBT Virginians in their official non-discrimination policies, Adam led members of the House Democratic caucus to denounce Cuccinelli's actions from the floor of the House of Delegates. Adam has been a featured speaker at rallies against Cuccinelli's radical agenda, and introduced a bill (HB 2468) to rein in the Attorney General's power to file civil lawsuits.

Defending LGBT Virginians. As the founder of the Virginia Partisans Gay & Lesbian Democratic Club and first openly gay member of the General Assembly, Adam Ebbin has been a leader in the fight for equality. In the House of Delegates, Adam worked with former Governors Warner and Kaine to secure executive orders protecting LGBT Virginians from discrimination in state employment and led efforts to expand life insurance benefits to domestic partners (HB 865, HB 352).

Being a Voice for the Voiceless

Since taking office, Delegate Ebbin has been a champion of those whose needs are too often overlooked.

Protecting Virginia's Seniors. As Senator, Adam Ebbin will defend services for seniors against budget cuts, and fight to ensure that elderly Virginians are treated with the respect and dignity they deserve. In the House, he expanded protections for seniors and disabled Virginians against abuse (HB 952).

Welcoming New Americans. When many politicians attempt to vilify Virginia's hardworking immigrant population, Adam Ebbin will not let their attacks go unanswered. In 2004, Adam filed a state version of the "Dream Act," (HB 838) which would allow certain immigrant children to attend Virginia universities at in-state tuition rates, and will continue to be a leading voice in support of new Americans.

Defending Human Rights. Few people are more vulnerable than victims of human trafficking. Delegate Ebbin has fought to ensure that their rights are not forgotten (HB 2923, HB 2190). Adam has also created tougher penalties for the perpetrators of this heinous crime (HB 1113). He has fought to protect workers from exploitation (HB 2924HB 1113HB 2190).

Building a Better Future for Virginia

Adam Ebbin recognizes that we can't play politics when it comes to investment in the Commonwealth's future. That's why he's fought to protect school budgets from cuts, increase Metro funding including $3 billion for capital improvements (HB 2596) and has authored legislation to fight waterway pollution from throwaway grocery bags (HB 2010).

Investing in Public Schools. A strong educational system for our children today is essential to maintaining Virginia's economic growth tomorrow. Adam Ebbin's commitment to our public schools has won him recognition from the Virginia Education Association. In 2011, he joined with Democratic legislators to prevent education funds from being redirected to other purposes. In the Senate, he will work to ensure that every young Virginian receives a quality education. He is an ally to Virginia's teachers and parents alike. He helped establish requirements for reading and math specialists in our public schools, and has led on safe school initiatives, including his effort to crack down on bullying (HB 1576).

Expanding Transit to Fight the BRAC Debacle. Adam Ebbin has worked to address the looming traffic crisis at Seminary Rd and 395. He joined with Delegate Charniele Herring to secure state dollars for a ramp to help alleviate traffic congestion. Adam has proposed new state funds for expanded transit from BRAC-133 to Metro, and will continue to work for solutions.

Fighting for a Greener Future. Adam Ebbin will take his record of leadership on environmental issues with him to the Virginia Senate. In the House, Adam won support for a measure to foster greater use of green energy through a low-interest loan fund for solar panels (HB 2191) and worked with Governor Kaine to require green standards for new state buildings. He will continue to fight to expand green energy use, and to reduce the use of throwaway grocery bags. He will continue to stand beside the League of Conservation Voters, who have recognized him six times as a "Legislative Hero."
